Parenting Advice From Joy Berry: Infant/Toddler Travel Kits

Every collection of travel tips for infants/toddlers usually includes putting together take-along bags containing various activities to engage young children while on the go.

There are two other take-along kits that I feel are just as essential as the activity kit: the Medical Kit, and the Maintenance Kit. Both kits are invaluable for short and long trips with infants and toddlers.

The key is to put these kits together ahead of time and store them with the family’s luggage so they are readily available when the time comes to pack for a trip. When putting these travel aids together it is important to limit the quantities of each item so that the kits can remain as compact and portable as possible. It is also important to replace any supplies that have been used immediately after each trip.

The Medical Kit should include the following:

  1. Thermometer
  2. Band-Aids
  3. Baby aspirin
  4. Medicine for diarrhea
  5. Antihistamine for colds or allergies
  6. Glycerin suppositories for constipation
  7. Diaper rash ointment
  8. Sunscreen
  9. Vitamins
  10. Vital information such as the pediatrician’s phone number and the medical insurance number

All of the medications should be in childproof containers. In addition, when traveling, parents should keep this kit with them instead of putting it in baggage that can be lost or stolen.

The Maintenance Kit should include the following:

  1. Washable or disposable changing surface (Plastic garbage bags work well and can be used for diaper disposal.)
  2. Disposable diapers
  3. Pre-moistened towelettes for easy cleanup
  4. Ointment or powder for diaper rash
  5. Plastic bags for used diapers
  6. Sealed containers of fruit juice and baby food
  7. Eating and drinking utensils, including a baby bottle, spoon, and cup
  8. Bib
  9. Protective clothing such as a sweater, jacket, a warm hat, or a sun hat
  10. Full change of clothing
  11. Baby blanket

Parents might want to keep the Maintenance Kit with them when traveling instead of putting it in baggage that can be lost or stolen.

My favorite gift to give any prospective parent is either the Medical Kit or the Maintenance Kit. Taking the time to put such a kit together has always been greatly appreciated by every parent-to-be. In addition these kits are sure-fire gifts for any baby shower.
